The assay overcomes challenges associated with traditional, less sensitive methodologies by detecting a fraction of one organism, whereas wet mount requires at least 10,000 motile organisms/mL to visualize.

The Aptima Herpes Simplex Viruses 1 & 2 assay is an in vitro diagnostic nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), using real time transcription-mediated amplification (TMA), for the qualitative detection and differentiation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) messenger RNA (mRNA) in clinician-collected swab specimens from anogenital skin lesions. It distinguishes between HSV-1 and HSV-2 with significant reduction in hands-on time for laboratory professionals when compared to culture and other instrument platforms.

APTIMA Combo 2 Assay

The APTIMA Combo 2 Assay is a target amplification nucleic acid probe test that utilizes target capture for the in vitro qualitative detection and differentiation of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) from Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) in endocervical and male urethral swab specimens, and in female and male urine specimens. The assay may be used to test specimens from symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals to aid in the diagnosis of gonococcal and/or chlamydial urogenital disease using the TIGRIS DTS automated analyzer or semi-automated instrumentation as specified.
